Introduction

Regular walking is an excellent form of exercise and will help with

  • weight problems
  • performance of heart, lungs and circulation, reducing the risk of heart disease and strokes
  • lowering blood pressure
  • reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes
  • boost the immune system

Walking is one of the few forms of exercise that is free for everyone to take part in. You can walk for as long as you want, at any time and wherever you are. You can walk on your own, or in a group. However, there are some precautions that you should take which are detailed in the other pages in this section.

You should make sure you are familiar with the relevant sections of the Highway Code and the Countryside Code.

Make sure you take all litter home with you. This includes biodegradable items such as banana skins and apple cores; they may decompose in a few months but consider how you would feel if they were left in your garden every day.
